Capri is one of Italy’s top destinations. Its superb rocky cliffs, its no less magnificent grottoes dotting the coastline, its peaks, its towns, everything is there to organise a unique upmarket holiday. But in between discoveries, it can be vital to know where to take a break for a good meal. So here’s a quick roundup of the island’s not-to-be-missed places to eat.
Lunch in the Capri sunshine
Don’t worry if you’re coming to Capri by boat. Several establishments offer mooring areas to make your life easier. The best known is undoubtedly La Fontelina, located on a beach in Capri town. Of course, it’s not the only establishment in this very touristy area, but La Fontelina, located on the famous Beach Club, not far from Faraglioni, has everything to tempt the most discerning. Anchor your yacht in front of the club and a shuttle will pick you up. Take a seat under the pergola and marvel at the incredible sea views. The content of the dishes also deserves your full attention. Fresh pasta concocted by the chef using local produce (seafood, fish, vegetables) will delight your taste buds. On the menu, for example, delicate seafood salads or spaghetti with a thousand and one flavours of clams. Pair your meal with an excellent wine (the wine list is extensive). Treat yourself to a refreshing lemon dessert, or opt for a traditional Campania doughnut.
Another excellent choice for a lunch break, the Ricio is located not far from the famous Grotta Azzura, near Anacapri. Here, seafood is king. The restaurant is located in a palace and offers everything you need to enjoy yourself. You can eat right on the water in a relaxed, chic atmosphere. Treat yourself to the renowned Plateau Royal, featuring top-quality seafood accompanied by pieces of fresh truffle – an unusual pairing, but one that works. The spaghetti with sea urchins is also a firm favourite on the restaurant’s menu. Finally, it’s impossible to resist the Chamber of Temptations, a programme of delights for all lovers of fabulous desserts. Try the majolica or the rum baba. Between mouthfuls, take in the breathtaking scenery!
If you’re looking for a romantic place to dine, you can book a table at Paolino. The place has won over stars from all over the world. It’s true that the terrace with its thousand lemon trees is a special place, and the cuisine also deserves to be ranked among the best on the island. Here you can enjoy freshly caught fish fillets grilled with skill, an unforgettable lemon chicken recipe, delicious pasta recipes (such as smoked pacherri), and top-of-the-range desserts where lemon, the star of the island, is king.
Dinner in Capri?
Not far from the Capri marina, La Campannina is well known to regulars. It serves simple yet exquisite home cooking. The flavours of Campanian cuisine are brought to the fore. The setting is pleasant. The room on the veranda is all in white and decorated with countless plants to create a chic atmosphere. The chef offers dishes of rare finesse, all concocted from remarkably fresh produce. The restaurant is easily accessible from the marina. Don’t forget to book, as the restaurant is very popular.
È Divino is another ideal place to spend a perfect evening with good food. The setting is pretty, with tables laid out on the grass, ideal for relaxing after a long day’s sightseeing. The dishes served are perfectly prepared and you can enjoy ravioli with capresi or spaghetti with seafood. Dessert lovers are sure to love the lemon delight, perfect for cooling off before bed.
Another restaurant awaits you on Capri, in the heart of the island: the Mammà. Here you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Gulf of Naples. The decor is sober and refined, ideal for enjoying the outdoors and watching the sun set over the Mediterranean. On the plate, chef Raffaele Amitrano creates succulent dishes such as tagliatelle with celery, tuna tartare with fennel, fried prawns, black Casertano pork with annurca apple and nocerino onion purée, and steamed cod, an exceptional dish that will delight even the most demanding gourmets. Its lemon delight also deserves a special mention.
If you need to eat on the run
Between two visits, you often don’t have much time. L’Aurora is one of the best pizzerias (if not the best) on the island. It’s located in the heart of the capital, so you can enjoy a good meal without spending long hours at the table. You can enjoy the amazing pizza dell’aqua, a recipe that is over 100 years old. If the atmosphere appeals to you, you can spend more time in the restaurant’s dining room. You’ll love the delicious carpaccio, the fabulous seafood and the exquisite truffle pasta.
