The 6 most expensive yachts in the world

Yachts are veritable floating palaces, fascinated as much by their architectural excess as by their luxury. Here are 6 exceptional vessels that rank among the most expensive in the world.

The Eclipse: the most famous yacht

The Eclipse is the personal yacht of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovitch. This luxury vessel was delivered by the German shipyard Blohm & Voss in 2010. At what price? According to several estimates, no less than 900 million euros!

On board you’ll find a whole host of luxurious facilities: a restaurant, a cinema, two nightclubs, a sauna, a hammam, Jacuzzis, two swimming pools, a fitness room, as well as a library, an art gallery, a personal hairdresser and even an ATM.

Not to mention Roman Abramovitch’s personal suite: 465 m² with two bedrooms, a private garden, two bathrooms, an office, a dining room and a second cinema room!

For safety, all the portholes are bulletproof. The yacht even has its own anti-missile system, an inner harbour capable of accommodating three speedboats and a submarine capable of diving to a depth of 50 metres if circumstances force the owner to leave his boat.

She has an average speed of 19 knots. She has a crew of 70. With a length of 165.5 metres, she was the longest yacht in the world for 3 years. The record was beaten by the Azzam (see below).

The Azzam: the longest yacht in the world

The Azzam is a luxury yacht for private use. Built in 2013 by the Lürssen shipyard in Bremen, Germany, she is 180 metres long. The exterior was designed by Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi and the interior by French designer Christophe Leoni.

This sumptuous vessel belongs to the President of the United Arab Emirates, Khalifa ben Zayed Al Nahyane, and cost him 470 million euros.

Not much is known about the equipment and other technologies on board, as these secrets are jealously guarded. All we know is that there are six decks and two helipads.

The ship weighs 13,136 tonnes. She makes 31.5 knots thanks to two gas turbines and two 94,000 hp diesel engines. It has a fuel storage capacity of 1,000,000 litres.

She has an estimated value of €600 million, and is currently listed for charter (although it is not known how much).

REV Ocean: an eco-friendly superyacht

This expedition and research superyacht has a single goal: “Make the ocean healthy again”. Paradoxically, this boat belongs to Norwegian billionaire Kjell Inge Rokke, who made his fortune in the offshore oil industry. With 3.6 billion dollars at his disposal, Rokke created the REVOcean foundation with a clear ecological aim.

With a view to sustainable development, this superyacht seems to generate as much energy as it needs.

Launched in August 2019, REVOcean has set its sights on the Arctic to study polar fauna, ice-ocean interactions, ocean currents and the impact of microplastics in the ocean.

The History Supreme: the most expensive boat in the world?

The most expensive yacht in the world today could well be the History Supreme. With a design by Stuart Hughes, an acknowledged specialist in working with gold objects. Its estimated value is 4 billion euros, and it is owned by a wealthy Malaysian.

This incredible price tag has less to do with the size of the boat (just 30.48 metres) than with the use of 100,000 kilos of solid gold and diamonds during the three years of construction required to design it.

The dining room, the deck, the railings and the anchor were all made from sumptuous materials. What’s more, rumour has it that the bedrooms are covered in platinum, that there is a meteorite stone bulkhead and a statue carved from a Tyrannosaurus bone.

Finally, it’s a shame that this boat… never existed. According to the management of the Italian shipyard credited with the creation of the vessel, it was in fact a hoax created by Stuart Hughes himself.

The Sailing Yacht A: an ultra-modern, luxurious yacht

Even if it is motorised, it’s hard not to mention the Sailing Yacht A. At 142.81 metres long, her three masts also rise to 100 metres above sea level. It’s the largest sailing boat on Earth.

Her ultra-modern design is by Frenchman Philippe Stark. This incredible vessel has 8 different decks, 12,600 gross tonnage, hybrid diesel-electric propulsion and state-of-the-art navigation instruments.

This gigantic boat cost Russian billionaire Andreï Melnitchenko a whopping 30 million euros to build.

The Flying Fox: the superyacht for charter

We still don’t know the name of her owner, but we do know that this 136-metre vessel cost 400 million dollars to build.

The design of the Flying Fox was entrusted to the Danish naval architecture firm Espen Oino. Despite its extraordinary size, the ship has a refined, elegant exterior. Inside, you can indulge in a wide range of leisure activities in a contemporary setting, with a strong emphasis on wood. The work was carried out by designer Mark Berryman.

As for the rest, the ship has two helipads. It also benefits from a satellite system that allows the ship to be immobilised facing the sun without the need to drop anchor.

Finally, for diving fans, this boat has it all! On board, you’ll find a decompression chamber and a nitrox mixer to provide enriched air and descend to depths of up to 100 metres.

By offering these top-of-the-range services and a host of leisure activities, the owner of the Flying Fox aims to appeal to a wealthy public looking for a week of relaxation aboard a superyacht. He is also offering to charter his boat for 4 million dollars a week, an effective way of quickly paying off the construction costs.
