More often than not, superyachts can cost their owners several hundred million euros to build. Here’s a look at some of the world’s most prestigious (and expensive) ships.
The Assam and her 180 metres of luxury
The world’s largest yacht is currently the Azzam. At 180 metres long, this luxury yacht for private use was delivered in record time (just 3 years of work) by the Lürssen shipyards in 2016.
This sumptuous vessel belongs to the former Emir of Abu Dhabi and President of the United Arab Emirates, Khalifa ben Zayed Al Nahyane. It cost him a whopping 470 million euros. The exterior was designed by Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi and the interior by French designer Christophe Leoni.
Little information has been released about the interior facilities. All we know is that there is a helipad and six decks. The ship weighs a total of 13,136 tonnes. She makes 31.5 knots thanks to two gas turbines and two 94,000 hp diesel engines. She also has a fuel storage capacity of 1,000,000 litres.
She has an estimated value of 600 million euros and is listed for charter (although the amount has not yet been revealed).
The Eclipse: a sumptuous yacht with a wealth of facilities
The Eclipse is a luxury vessel built by the German shipyard Blohm & Voss in Hamburg. At what price? According to several estimates, no less than 900 million euros! Inaugurated in 2010, it is the personal yacht of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovitch, an oil and gas magnate whose personal fortune is estimated at €15 billion.
On board, there are two swimming pools, a cinema, a restaurant, a fitness room, two nightclubs, a hammam, a sauna, numerous jacuzzis, a library, an art gallery and an ATM.
To this must be added the 465 m² of the billionaire’s personal suite: two bedrooms, a private garden, a giant aquarium, a heliport, two bathrooms, an office, a dining room and a second cinema!
For security reasons, all the windows are bulletproof. And because you can never be too careful, the yacht even has its own anti-missile system, an inner harbour capable of accommodating three speedboats and a submarine capable of diving to a depth of 50 metres in the event of an unexpected attack on deck.
She has an average speed of 19 knots. She has a crew of 70. With a length of 165.5 metres, she was the longest yacht in the world for 3 years. The record was beaten in 2016 by the Azzam (see above).
The Dubai: the yacht of a thousand and one nights
The Dubai is just over 160 metres long. It is owned by Mohammed ben Rachid Al Maktoum, the Emir of Dubai.
Its value is estimated at 300 million euros. It can check-in 72 guests and between 60 and 120 crew members. The boat has a swimming pool, a large dining room, two lounges, a helipad and a discotheque.
Not very keen on long crossings, the ship is mainly moored in the port of Dubai.
But that’s not all! Other boats are also reaching record lengths. Here are a few examples:
- The Topaz: 63 million euros / Owner: Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan / Lürssen shipyards, 147 metres.
- The REVOcean: between 350 and 500 million euros / Owner: Kjell Inge Røkke / Vard Tulcea shipyards, 183 metres.
- The Fulk Al Salamah, €500 million / Owner: Royal Family of Oman / Mariotti Yachts shipyards (2016), 164 metres.
- The Dilbar: €600 million / Owner: Alicher Ousmanov / Lürssen shipyards (2016), 156 metres.
- Al Saïd: €250 million / Owner: Qabus Ibn Saïd / Lürssen Shipyards (2008), 155 metres.
- Le Serene: €294 million / Owner: Yuri Scheffler / Fincantieri shipyards, 134 metres.
